Frequently asked questions
1. Are Yale alarm systems affected by CB radios, Taxis or any other wireless radio equipment?

2. Do pets affect Yale alarm systems?

If you have pets select one of pet friendly Yale alarms. All pets will set of the standard movement detectors.

3. Can the PIRs/Sensors be fitted in external buildings e.g. garage/shed?

Yes, although door and window contacts should be used to prevent false alarms from insects etc. moving in the PIR zone.

4. Can you have two entry zones for the back door and front door?

Yes, you can have as many Entry/Exit zones as you like.

5. How far away from the control unit can I put a sensor ?

Sensors will generally work up to 30m away from the control panel. There is a test function to check if the sensor works at a certain distance from the control unit.

6. How long do the batteries last?

Up to 3 years. There is a low battery warning on the system.

7. How many remote controls/keypads can I use?

Each remote control or keypad will take away one of the 20 available spaces for detectors on your system.

8. Are the detectors and siren unit protected against unauthorized removal?

PIRs, door contacts and the siren are fitted with anti-tamper devices. If the unit is vandalized or altered without authorization an audible alarm will be triggered whether the system is armed or not . This feature may be disabled to allow batteries to be replaced etc.

9. How long does the siren ring for and can I reduce the time?

You can adjust the siren to ring for 3, 5 or 10 minutes.

10. I have a two-bedroom house, what do I need?

The system allows you to install up to 20 detectors. You can decide how many you wish to install to protect your home.

11. Where should I put my detectors to get the best protection?

In the corner of the room, approximately 2.3 meters from the floor.

12. Can I change the entry time?

Yes this the entry/exit times can be changed to suit your circumstances.

13. Is my alarm system compatible with others?

All the alarms in the Yale HSA 6000 range are compatible with complimentary accessories.

14. Can my system operate more than one siren?

Yes more than one siren can be used. At the moment however spare sirens are not issued by Yale.

15. Can the system be set so that activity in part of the building does not set the alarm off? Yes all the new 6000 series Yale alarms can be zoned/ part set.

16. Will my system re-arm itself after an alarm?

After the siren stops sounding, the system will re-arm.

17. What type of batteries does the system require?

Standard alkaline batteries can be used such as AA or AAA.

18. Could someone else use their remote control to operate my system?

Only remote controls programmed into your system can be used to operate it.

19. If my neighbour has the same system will it interfere with mine?

There will be no interference as long as the sirens or control units are not within 1 metre of each other.

20. Can a contact detector be mounted upside-down?

Yes, also horizontally, as long as the magnet is opposite the arrow.

21. Should the jumper be ON (2 pins) or OFF (1 pin)?

The ON position is used for test purposes as it allows the L.E.D to indicate when the detector is being activated. To conserve battery life the jumper should be OFF, the L.E.D will then only flash to indicate a "low battery" condition or an open tamper switch.

22. UPVC doors and frames aren't level, how can the detector and magnet be installed side-by-side?

Packaging may have to be set to bring the detector and magnet together. The position is only approximate and can be tested by putting the jumper to ON, this will allow the L.E.D to indicate when the magnet is operating the detector.

23. There isn't enough width on the frame to mount the detector, could it be mounted on the door with the magnet on the frame?

Yes the detector can be mounted on the door.

24. Can the door/window contacts be fixed with adhesive rather than screws?

Screw fixing is preferable but adhesive pads are provided as an option. If adhesive pads are being used it is important that the contact surfaces are thoroughly cleaned to ensure a strong adhesion.

25. Why does the PIR detect OK with the jumper ON but not with it OFF?

With the jumper ON the PIR is in test mode and is more active for ease of testing. When the jumper is OFF the L.E.D. no longer flashes and a 'sleep time' is used to conserve the battery life. Before the PIR can transmit that it has detected movement the 'sleep time' (1 minute)  has to be allowed to expire. The PIR should not be allowed to see any movement for 1.5 minutes, it will then be ready to transmit the next time it detects movement.

26. Can PIR's be used in areas where cats/dogs have access?

Choose a pet friendly alarm kit for pets up to 26KG in size. For lager animals 'Home Omit' any PIR likely to be activated.

27. Should the L.E.D. flash when movement is detected?

Not when set for normal operation; if it flashes it is indicating either a low battery condition or an open tamper switch.

28. Why does the PIR indicate a tamper fault?

The spring on the tamper switch operating peg is possibly out of position, check the spring covers only the tampered part of the peg; relocate if necessary.

29. What area does the PIR cover?

The detection spread is 110 degrees, the range is 15 metres.

30. The PIR seems to react slowly when I walk towards it.

A PIR will be slow to detect movement directly towards or away from it and should be positioned so that movement would normally be across its field of view.

31. Is it OK for a PIR to face a window?

It is best that a PIR shouldn't look directly at a window but could be mounted at an angle to the window i.e. across a corner.

32. Will the PIR be activated by a radiator heating up?

Is it OK for a PIR to be able to see a radiator but should not be located above a radiator.

33. I cannot ‘learn in’ my device. What should I do?

During ‘learning in’ your alarm, give the system at least 10 seconds between each stage.
